Boston Foundation March Grants include major workforce initiative investments
Boston –The Boston Foundation announced today grants totaling more than $13 million. This included important grants to two workforce development programs designed to support major initiatives of the Foundation. The Allied Health Initiative received $500,000 to continue the work of creating a pipeline of skilled health care workers, offering jobs skills for local residents. A second grant of $500,000 was made to SkillWorks, which also addresses the needs of hard-to-employ residents.

Boston Foundation announces new staff, changes in Program Department organization
Boston – The Boston Foundation has announced a realignment of its Program Department, which oversees competitive grantmaking and tracks the Foundation’s initiatives. As part of the changes, two new senior staff members have joined the department, and several members of the current staff have had their roles redefined. The changes create a collaborative structure to create greater opportunities for strategic grantmaking. Program Officers with expertise in a specific sector will continue to oversee grants made in that sector, but they will work more closely with their colleagues to increase the Foundation’s overall grantmaking in terms of total impact.

Boston Foundation appoints Lisabeth Llewellyn to the position of Chief Administrative Officer
Boston –The Boston Foundation has named Lisabeth Llewellyn as Chief Administrative Officer, overseeing human resources, information technology, and office and facilities management.In addition, a new position of Director of Information Technology has been created, which will have responsibility for planning and managing the Foundation’s information systems, including its database. Michaela A. June, formerly an independent consultant, has been named to that position.

Boston Foundation announces $400K in Pilot School planning grants for Boston
Boston –A total of 20 Boston schools have applied for financial support to begin the process of converting to Pilot School status—potentially doubling the number of students served by the innovative school model.In response, the Boston Foundation has announced it will distribute $400,000 in planning grants. The planning grants, typically between $18,000 and $20,000, are given to schools that have made the internal decision to seek Pilot status. They cover the incidental costs related to the first phase of the process. Schools that complete that process will be eligible for up to $100,000 each in implementation grants from the Foundation.

The Boston Foundation doubles annual gifts in 2007, nears $1 billion in assets
Boston – The Boston Foundation received more than $155 million in new gifts in the 2007 calendar year, more than double the amount in the previous year. The value of the Foundation’s assets rose to $964 million, up from $830 million at the start of the year. In the same year, over $92 million in grants—also the largest distribution in the Foundation’s history—were made to nonprofit organizations.
